“Relay for Life” with Rogers North

For more than four years, our team at Rogers North has participated in the Relay for Life. The 20+ person group joined together to support the fight against cancer and stand behind fellow co-workers Martina Gulevich (who battled a brain tumor) and Claudia Rivas (who battled Colon Cancer.)

Below are a few words from some of our Rogers North teammates:

Nicole:

“I take part in the Relay for Life because of my grandfather, great aunt and close friends who were affected by cancer. I walk so that one day we will find a cure; so that one day we can live cancer-free. The exhaustion and pain that we endure for a mere 12 hours to walk the track are a small price to pay when the loved ones around us have had to fight so much harder. I’ll walk every year that I can until we can find a cure for this horrible disease!”

Claudia:

“Well this is my second year to participate in this inspirational 12-hour overnight fundraising event. This year was a special year for me as I battled cancer. You always think it only happens to others, not to yourself or a close family members. In my case my mom and I have the same type of cancer (my sister had it as well.) But we are survivors – that’s why I participate in this event. It’s a chance to honour my mom, my sister and myself. Each day we face cancer and fight for life and I believe that with this fundraiser, people can get help and support before it’s too late. In my case, Northern Light hospital here in Fort McMurray had a quick response when I was diagnosed; this is my way to say ‘thanks’ and to pay tribute to those who haven’t been as fortunate.

Janette:

“I took part in the relay for a couple of reasons: I lost my dad & also close friends who passed away much too early due to cancer. We have two wonderful survivors in our office – Martina & Claudia – both of whom I admire and want to support. I also have other close friends fighting every day and I hope by showing support and raising money they will all be survivors.”

Angel:

“With many family and friends affected by cancer, I’m willing to do anything to help fight and find a cure.

Last year it rained all night; we were wet, cold and sore. Near the end of the night I just wanted to get warm and rest, so I went to my tent. When I got there I realized that this is nowhere near the battle our family and friends have gone through as they battle. I had no excuse to give up because those who are battling don’t either! So I got back up and walked those last couple of laps with everyone in my sock feet!”

Rogers North had a goal of raising $2000; with personal pledges, donations, bottle drives & garage sales they surpassed it. They then set the bar to $2500. When they passed that number, they challenged the rest of the Rogers North staff to help get them to the $3000 mark. When the final tally was in, “Team Rogers Rabbits” raised $4050 (a number they plan to beat next year!)

Rogers North would like to extend a huge ‘Thank you’ to everyone who supported the team; from families and children to colleagues who cheered us on and walked alongside us. Also, our thanks to VP Mary Murray, who sponsored team hoodies.
